Instructions for airing out and initial furniture care

Instructions for airing and initial furniture care

1. Purpose of the instructions

These guidelines cover the phase following the delivery and opening of bookcases, glass cabinets, sideboards, storage furniture, kitchen organization furniture, and other panel-based or ready-to-assemble furniture.

Closed packaging, protective materials, and time spent in transit can trap odors from cardboard, plastics, adhesives, coatings, or furniture manufacturing processes. The odor perceived upon opening is not sufficient on its own to determine air composition, product compliance, or the existence of a defect. It must be evaluated in conjunction with the condition of the furniture, its intensity, persistence, and the presence of any visible alterations.

Specific instructions provided in the product sheet, on the packaging, or in the manual supplied with the furniture take precedence over the general guidelines on this page. Qulendra does not attribute any certifications, emission classes, or performance levels to an item that are not expressly stated in the relevant documentation.

2. Inspection before airing

Before leaving the furniture to rest, verify that all packages have been received and that panels, doors, shelves, glass, hardware, and accessories correspond to the parts list.

Check in particular for:

presence of wet cardboard or traces of moisture;

swelling, lifted edges, or detached coatings;

sticky surfaces, leaks, or unidentified residues;

deformed panels or cracks;

cracked or chipped glass;

extensive stains or color changes;

localized odor associated with a visibly damaged part.

These conditions should not be treated as a simple packaging odor. Do not assemble or aggressively clean the affected component. Photograph the package, the label, the part, and the anomaly, then contact Qulendra as soon as reasonably possible.

The absence of photographs does not automatically void consumer rights, but timely documentation can facilitate the distinction between transport damage, an inherent defect, and post-delivery alteration.

3. Preparing the environment

Choose a dry, clean, and well-ventilated room. The area must allow for opening the packages without bending long panels, hitting glass, or placing finished surfaces directly on the floor.

Before opening:

protect the floor with clean cardboard or a non-abrasive cloth;

keep away from flames, heaters, radiators, and other heat sources;

avoid rooms with condensation, leaks, or high humidity;

keep doors and windows used for air exchange unobstructed;

keep children and pets away from bags, straps, hardware, and unsecured panels;

arrange for the help of a second person for heavy or bulky parts.

Do not leave packages outdoors, on exposed balconies, in damp garages, or in rooms subject to large temperature fluctuations. Airing must be done without exposing the furniture to rain, prolonged direct sunlight, or drafts that could cause unstable parts to fall.

4. Opening and removing packaging

Open one package at a time using scissors or a utility knife with a short blade. Do not cut deep: panels, edges, and hardware bags may be located immediately under the cardboard.

Remove films, bags, and protections only to the extent necessary to check and air the components. Protective films adhering to the surface should not be torn off without checking the instructions, as some must remain applied until assembly is complete.

Separate the panels with the clean spacers provided in the packaging or with smooth, non-abrasive supports. Do not place finished surfaces against each other without protection. Doors, glass, and long panels must be supported stably and not left leaning where they could slip.

Temporarily keep cardboard, corner protections, labels, and internal materials until the check is complete. They may be needed to identify packages or organize any potential return.

5. Airing method

Air exchange must be regular and compatible with external conditions. When safe to do so, open windows or doors to create a cross-breeze, avoiding exposure to rain, moisture, or direct sunlight.

Intermittent and repeated airing is generally preferable to keeping the furniture in a closed room. If using existing mechanical ventilation in the home, ensure it is set according to the system's instructions and does not channel humid or contaminated air toward the furniture.

Do not cover panels with waterproof tarps while they rest. Do not close them in closets or rooms without air exchange. If the furniture is assembled immediately, leave doors and drawers open in a safe position without overloading hinges or slides.

Ventilation must be suspended when external conditions could introduce water, excessive dust, smoke, or other contamination. In such cases, it is preferable to wait for more suitable conditions or use the home’s standard air exchange system, if available.

6. Duration of resting

There is no fixed number of hours applicable to every piece of furniture. The reduction of an odor depends on:

the declared materials and finishes;

the volume and number of components;

time spent in the packaging;

temperature and humidity of the room;

amount of air exchange;

presence of cardboard, plastic, and other protections;

size of the environment;

opening or closing of compartments, doors, and drawers.

Check the environment at regular intervals and continue airing until the odor is clearly reduced and does not reappear intensely after temporarily closing the room or compartments.

A mild odor may gradually diminish without additional intervention. A very intense, unchanged, or increasing odor, especially if accompanied by residues, deformations, moisture, or surface alterations, should be reported before using the furniture.

7. Airing before and after assembly

When the parts are intact and complete, the furniture can be assembled following the manual. Do not change the sequence to speed up airing and do not drill additional holes.

After assembly:

verify stability and alignment;

install anti-tip devices where provided;

open doors and drawers without leaving them in a position that could cause injury;

keep internal compartments free;

do not immediately place textiles, books, packaged food, or items capable of absorbing odors inside;

air the back side as well, without blocking technical openings;

wait until surfaces are dry before storing any objects.

For tall bookcases, sideboards, and glass cabinets, doors and shelves should not be used until the furniture is correctly stabilized and secured according to the instructions. Airing does not replace secure assembly.

8. Furniture intended for the kitchen

Furniture placed near the kitchen must be aired at a time when there is no intense steam, cooking smoke, or splatters. During the initial phase, it is preferable not to position it immediately next to a sink, an open dishwasher, a cooktop, or a heat source.

Edges, joints, holes, and the underside of panels must remain dry. Airing does not require wetting, washing, or treating the furniture. If it is necessary to remove packaging dust, use a soft, dry cloth or one that is barely damp, followed by immediate drying.

Do not leave bowls of water, wet cloths, or absorbent substances directly on the shelves. These methods can cause stains, localized moisture, or contact with incompatible materials.

9. Methods not to be used

To reduce the odor, do not use:

perfumes, deodorants, or sprays directly on the furniture;

bleach, ammonia, concentrated alcohol, or solvents;

concentrated vinegar or unverified household mixtures;

steam cleaners;

hair dryers, heat guns, or heaters;

heat lamps;

ozone generators;

incense, candles, or burning substances;

abrasive powders, oils, waxes, or unauthorized polishes;

sealed waterproof bags or covers around the furniture.

Masking the odor is not the same as removing its cause. Excessive heat can warp panels, adhesives, and coatings. Steam and liquids can penetrate through edges and holes. Combustion and certain air-treatment devices can introduce additional substances into the environment.

Do not mix chemical products and do not apply substances to surfaces whose finish has not been identified.

10. Sensitive individuals, children, and pets

During unpacking and ventilation, it is advisable to limit the time children, pets, and people who are particularly sensitive to odors spend in the room.

If a person experiences eye or respiratory irritation, discomfort, dizziness, or other symptoms while in the room, they should leave, ventilate the area, and discontinue use of the furniture until the situation has been assessed. In case of significant or persistent symptoms, or medical concerns, you must consult a healthcare professional or the relevant emergency services.

Qulendra can assist with a commercial assessment of the product, but does not provide medical diagnoses or perform professional air quality measurements at the customer's home.

11. When to contact Qulendra

Contact talkhelp@qulendra.com when:

the odor remains very intense despite proper ventilation;

the odor increases after unpacking;

it is concentrated in an area with leaks, residue, or damage;

swelling, sticky surfaces, or peeling occurs;

the furniture arrived wet or with damp packaging;

necessary information about the material or maintenance is missing;

you believe the product does not match the description.

The report should include your name, order number, part code if available, date the packages were opened, a description of the room, the approximate duration of the ventilation already performed, and photographs of any visible anomalies.

Qulendra may request additional relevant information, investigate the case, and indicate the applicable solution. The customer must avoid permanent interventions, chemical treatments, or disposal of the packaging until the necessary elements for the verification have been collected.

12. Care after the initial phase

Once the odor has been reduced, keep the furniture in a dry environment with normal air circulation. Avoid prolonged contact with water, steam, heat, and direct sunlight.

Clean with a soft cloth and use only detergents compatible with the declared material. Apply the cleaning product to the cloth and not directly onto the surface. Dry edges and joints without leaving standing moisture.

Distribute weight according to the indicated load limits. Do not block any ventilation openings and do not place the furniture against damp walls or walls prone to condensation. Periodically check the tightness of the hardware and the stability of any required fasteners.

13. Withdrawal, returns, and refunds

The consumer may communicate their withdrawal without providing a reason within 30 calendar days. For orders delivered in multiple packages or at different times, the period begins upon receipt of the last item, package, lot, or piece.

During the evaluation period, the furniture must be kept with reasonable care. Ventilating the product and removing the packaging to the extent necessary to examine it does not automatically invalidate the right of withdrawal. Chemical treatments, modifications, or use beyond normal assessment may result in a decrease in value.

After communicating the withdrawal, the item must be returned without undue delay and in any case within 14 days, following Qulendra’s instructions. The direct costs of returns made using the method indicated by Qulendra are covered by Qulendra.

When a refund is issued, the credit is typically visible within 3-6 business days, depending on the processing times of the bank, card network, or payment provider.

14. Operational order information

Orders are typically prepared for shipment within 1-3 business days. After handover to the carrier, delivery is estimated in 5-11 business days. Shipments may be handled by USPS, DHL Express, UPS, or FedEx.

For orders under 188.99 EUR, the standard delivery cost is 18.99 EUR. For orders of 188.99 EUR or more, the standard delivery cost is 0 EUR.

Prices include applicable taxes. Beyond any delivery cost indicated before order confirmation, no additional purchase-related fees are applied.
